The King is such an interesting piece on the chess board because every calculation you make in the game is made to either capture your opponent's King or protect your own. As the pieces move around the board, simulating war, the King oftentimes stands by nearly motionless. All too often the moment when he does actively engage in the battle, all that remains of his kingdom is a pile of pieces and empty squares. I always thought he must be lonely and I thought how heavy the crown must be after you have made the choice to engage in a protruded battle that decimated nearly all of your subjects. Looking out over his empty kingdom one wonders what he has won.
