BIOGRAPHY - Karl Witkowski (1860 - 1910)

Karl Witkowski was an American artist working in the later part of the 19th century.  Karl received his training in the studio of Jan Matejko (1838-1893) and like his mentor, specialized in genre and portrait painting.

Witkowski, like his contemporary J.G. Brown (1831 – 1913), focused his attention on the young shoeshine and paper boys working the in growing cities.  While there is no documentation to prove this; one would not be surprised to learn that Witkowsi studied with Brown.

In 1899 Karl was living at 786 South 15th Street, Newark, New Jersey and exhibited two paintings at the National Academy in New York City: Anticipating His Share and Tired Out.
